White rust

Condensation and white rust

In the light of prohibition of the production of materials with Cr6 passivation coating (Directive 2000/53/EC) and its replacement with Cr3 passivation, it is important to carefully consider the storing of materials. In this case, Cr3 material is much more sensitive to dampness and temperature fluctuations. Special care must be taken when transporting and storing Cr3 passivation materials in different weather conditions, especially if materials are packed tightly against each other. The image shows at which temperature and relative humidity level the condensation occurs between the layers of a roll. There have been situations in which white rust can occur within a couple of days, if the conditions are right.
